Description

Battle Chaplain Athan Rokeby, CYGNAR WARCASTER CHARACTER
Battle Chaplain Athan Rokeby's history is a harsh one, but one that ultimately will bring victory for the forces of Cygnar. He grew up in the town of Caspia, but was orphaned at an early age. Rumour has it that his parents had been devout Morrowans, and had passed this faith on to Rokeby. When he was old enough, he was recruited into the Cygnaran military, taking up position as an apprentice Sword Knight. His skill in battle proved exemplary, mostly due to the fact that he could coax a little extra out of the warjacks fighting alongside his unit. Before his promotion to Sergeant, his potential was recognised by the then-Captain Victoria Haley, and he returned to Caspia to train as a warcaster.

In a short time he was back as a journeyman, given control of a faithful Charger by his master, an aging warcaster by the name of Altrius Cove. On leave in his wife's small village on the coast of Northern Cygnar, the village came under attack by Cryxian pirates. With a unit of valiant long gunners and two Chargers left for defense, Rokeby held off the attack while his wife lead the villagers out of the town.

Suddenly, one of his Chargers was knocked out of sight and out of his arcane control. Rokeby found himself knocked to the dirt, a giant helljack looming over him. His hand reached out and grasped the nearest weapon available, a mace. With a single swing, the enchantments surrounding the helljack were undone, the fire went out of its eyes, and the tide of the battle turned.

Finally, with three long gunners remaining, the battle was done. Corpses of the newly dead and the long dead, as well as the wreckage of two warjacks and countless bonejacks, littered the remains of the village. Following a trail of footprints, he came to the charred shell of the Morrowan chapel. With mounting dread, he entered the ruins, seeing bodies strewn here and there. He fell to his knees and cried out to Morrow, who responded to his sorrow with a command - “you will kill Lord Toruk.”

From that fateful day, Rokeby has fought alongside those who would destroy the Cryxian menace once and for all, vowing to avenge the death of his wife and to rid Caen of the Dragonfather, even if it takes his life.

Special Rules

Battle Chaplain Athan Rokeby

  • Divine Protection - Rokeby's remaining focus points are never ignored when determining his ARM.
  • Invest - During his activation Rokeby may allocate one of his focus to any one friendly warjack in his control area. This warjack does not have to be part of his battlegroup. This focus point is in addition to the normal allocation the warjack can receive.
  • Religious Intolerance - Models/units that will work for Cryx, or models/units specifically Thamarite, Cyrissist or Menite, may not be included in armies with Rokeby.

Morrowmace

  • Dispel - Any spell effects, upkept or otherwise, are removed from target model/unit.
  • Critical Stagger - On a critical hit, target model loses its initial attacks this round.

Feat

  • Blinding Radiance
Morrow's light sears the eyes of the enemy, and they turn away, offering a momentary lapse in their defenses. Enemy models in Athan's CTRL suffer blindness for one round. Blind models cannot make ranged or magic attacks, suffer -4 MAT and DEF, cannot run, charge or slam, and must forfeit their movement or action next activation.

Concept Notes

I love the idea of a good man getting better, and in this case, Athan was what came to mind. In terms of model, I want to make something along the lines of the Morrowan battle chaplain, with a more unique weapon and a shield with the Morrowan symbol or Cygnus (like the Sword Knights have). Colours for painting are whatever takes the fancy of the modeller, I guess

Playtesting Notes

Playtested first time recently. Nothing much to comment on, ran him with MAT 7 and that really helped. Feat went unused. Invest was valuable for the first two turns, then the Journeyman controlling the Charger was over-exposed and a Pistol Wraith killed him. Actually, Morrow's Hand was the only spell I used... hmmm. Came down to the line with him rolling 9 instead of 10 on 3d6 to kill Asphyxious, to be killed the next turn from spellfire. Thanks to those who've suggested changes and such. The feat will have to be re-written, I think.
