Description
Pull it out? My wife and daughter screamed the same thing while your countrymen had their fun. Funny how things come around like that. - Antoin Di Sade, Master Duelist
Duelists, Llael Unit
Duelling has been a tradition among the Llaelese nobility for centuries, considered the truly honorable way of resolving a conflict. In turn, young nobles were sent to famed duelling schools to be instructed in the ancient traditional style of combat. The masters of such institutions instructed all who came to train, but there always existed more promising individuals than others.
With sufficient training, the Master of the institution would declare the student a competant duelist. Others however, preferred to stay and continue learning the intricacy of the rapier due to personal interest (or in some cases personal protection). Such students would become far more than their standard peers, and certain institutions were famed for turning out especially prize individuals.
With the fall of Merwyn and the Khadoran occupation, such institutions were largely disbanded in the interest of keeping better control over the populace. Without tuition fees to support themselves, many of the former masters were reduced to selling out their services as bodyguards or private tutors.
Others however, have let the flame of rebellion spark in their hearts. Taking the students with the best skill that they most trust, these Masters move to join the Resistance to free their country of the Khadoran yoke. On the battlefield, for all of their elegant attire there are few more deadly in melee combat than a proficient Duelist. With pinpoint accuracy the thin rapiers can puncture heavy suits of armor at the slightest joint or crevice, entirely circumventing the enhanced protection of metal plating. More than one dead Man o' War has been found with little more than a trickle of blood flowing from the eye slit.
Special Rules
Master
- Leader
Duelists
- Pincushion- Instead of making melee attacks seperately with their Rapiers, two or more Duelists in melee range of the same living or undead model may combine their attacks. In order to participate in a Pincushion attack, a Duelist must be able to declare a melee attack against the intended target. The Duelist with the highest MAT in the attacking group makes one melee attack roll for the group and gains +1 to the attack roll for each Duelist, including himself, participating in the attack. If the attack is sucessful, the target suffers a normal damage roll with an additional die for every two Duelists participating in the attack.
- Planted Feet- A Duelist may voluntarily forfeit his movement to gain +2 DEF against melee attacks.
- Riposte- When a Duelist is the target of an enemy melee attack that misses, he may immediately make a melee attack targeting the attacking model if it is within his melee range.
Rapier
- Sweet Spot (* Attack)- Living warrior models with medium-sized or larger bases have their ARM stats halved when calculating damage from the Sweet Spot attack. Effects which further modify ARM are not reduced. A Weak Spot attack gains +2 POW against living warrior models with small bases.
Dirk
- Parry- Duelists cannot be targeted by free strikes.
Concept Notes
The 'elite melee unit' for the Llaelese resistence. Pincushion is excellent at dealing massive damage to a single target, giving you a maximum of 5 dice if you can get all of the Duelists there to attack. They are not difficult to kill at range, and they have normal speed for a warrior, but they still are incredibly lethal in melee combat. Planted Feet and Riposte make hitting them not only difficult but dangerous as well - and Sweet Spot means even the deadly Men o' War need to be careful of tangling with this unit.
Playtesting Notes
Playtested a grand total of twice, and it was clearly demonstrated exactly WHY this unit does not need weapon master or swordmaster. Poor poor Champions... It seems pretty solid right now, but it still might be a little too much.
