Help:Editing an Article

From IKwiki

In order to edit an article, simply click the Edit tab that appears at the top of the article to open the Edit page.

After editing something, you can use the Summary to describe what it is you changed.

Puting a check mark in the 'Minor edit' box will indicate that your changes are not very significant. You may have done small improvements to the article, or cleaned up spelling.

Checking the 'Watch this page' box will add that page to your watch list, so you can easliy keep track of future changes.

Clicking 'Save Page' will make whatever changes you have made permanent.

Clicking 'Show Preview' will show you what the page looks like with your edits in place. This can be used to check out the validity of links, the effect of formatting, etc.

Clicking 'Show Changes' will do just that, giving you a side-by-side comparison with the old text on the left and your new changes on the right.

For pages with multiple sections, you can click on the 'edit' link that appears next to the section title. It will open an edit page with just that section. It will also automatically put a comment in the Edit Summary to show which section you worked on.

Some guidlines to be aware of when editing articles:

  • Get some practise editing articles by editing you User page, if you have not done so already. Give yourself a description, or just play around in your sandbox.
  • Be bold in editing articles. Since every edit is archived in the history, there's no way to permanently delete or mess something up.
  • If you see errors, spelling mistakes, formatting trouble, or incompletness, you don't need to ask anyone's permission to get right in there and muck about.
  • Please be sure to leave a comment in the summary note area for every edit you make, even minor ones. Doing so makes keeping track of changes much easier.
  • Please use the minor edit tag on edits that don't include significant changes. Generally, any edit where you don't add or subtract important information can be considered a minor edit.
  • Feel free to add the page to your watchlist. This will allow you to easily see recent changes that others have made to the article.
  • Please use the Show Preview button after finishing an edit at least once before you click the Save Page button. Doing so will let you double check to make sure you made all the edits you need, and limit the need to go back into an article and make a second edit.
