Description
"Why do I follow him? Because I remember the first time I met him: One of the boys had raised a glass to King Leto. The Commander stood up, cuffed the poor lad and said 'A man who turns on his King deserves no loyalty from us'. That was the day my heart left Cygnar." - Anonymous Trencher Loyalist
Jaren Cross, Mercenary Warcaster
Not all Warcasters are born of conflict or discovered by accident. Jaren is an example of this as his inate magical prowess and affinity for controlling 'jacks were discovered at a young age. Given into the care of the Cygnaran Military by his parents, he rose steadily through the ranks and, while not the head of his class, he was certainly well on his way to a comission in armies of King Vinter Raelthorne IV. After graduating he was informed that he was to hone his warcasting skills under the wing of Asheth Magnus. Thrilled to be assigned to such a well known Commander, Jaren took to his studies with a fervor and the ruthlessness of his mentor's lessons made him the man he is today.
With the fall of his King, Jaren accepted a pardon from now King Leto Raelthorne and was assigned to an outpost on the Khadoran border, not far from his old mentor. Having trained under the man since his youth, Jaren was appaled at the treatment of his former teacher, first by the upstart Coleman Stryker, then by the High Command. When he heard of the events leading to Magnus' exile, Jaren personally petitioned King Leto to pardon his old master. King Leto not only refused, but took the opportunity to chastise him for his recklessness in personally leading large patrols, often into Khadoran territory, leaving his outpost with a skeleton crew. Enraged, upon returning to his command he deserted with his 'jacks and a handfull of men more loyal to him than to the Crown.
After many years of making his way as a blade for hire, Jaren hears word of Magnus' association with the Skorne, as well as rumours of the return of his King. Fueling his old Ironclad and gathering together what like-minded men he can find, Jaren prepares for the long journey to the Skorne lands to join with his old friend and teacher.
Special Rules
Jaren
- Mercenary Warcaster
Jaren will not work for Cygnar.
Jaren may only rally and give orders to Mercenary or Minion models and only Mercenary or Minion models may use his CMD for command checks.
- Nomad Familiarity
Nomad Mercenary warjacks in Jaren's battlegroup gain Reach on Battle Blade attacks and +1 MAT.
- Stolen Warjack
Up to 1 Cygnar Ironclad warjack may be included in Jaren's battlegroup. This 'jack has been in Jaren's care from his time in the Cygnar Army, and may begin the game bonded to him. It is considered a friendly mercenary warjack. If Jaren is destroyed or removed from play, this Ironclad becomes inert and may not be reactivated or marshalled.
- Agenda Warcaster
Jaren may be included Magnus' Agenda Mercenary Contract armies. Magnus' Agenda Mercenary Contract armies may include Jaren in place of Magnus. All other contract rules apply.
- Master and Student
When included in a Magnus' Agenda Mercenary Contract army, once per game models in Jaren's Battlegroup (including Jaren) may be affected by "Hit and Run" as if they were part of Magnus' Battlegroup -OR- models in Magnus' Battlegroup (including Magnus) may be affected by "Great Cleave" as if they were part of Jaren's Battlegroup.
- Skorne Minion Warcaster
Jaren and his battlegroup may be included in a 1000 points or larger Skorne army.
- Reckless Charge- When declaring a charge, Jaren may receive -2 DEF to charge at SPD + 5 across rough terrain and obstacles ignoring movement penalties. Reckless Charge lasts for one round.
- Forefend - When an enemy model enters and ends its movement within melee range, this model may immediately make a melee attack targeting that model. If this model makes a Forefend attack it may not make another until after it's controller's next turn.
Zweihänder
- Reach - 2" melee range.
- Trash - Double the POW of this weapon when resolving attacks against knocked-down targets.
- Thresher (* Attack)- This model may make one melee attack with this weapon against every model within its melee range in its front arc. Completely resolve each attack individually and apply the targets' special rules immediately as each attack is resovled. Determine damage normally. A model is ineligible to be hit if it has a special rule preventing it from being targeted or if the attacker's line of sight is completely blocked by terrain.
- Critical - Heavy Blow- On a critical hit a model damaged by Zweihänder suffers -4 ARM for one round. Heavy Blade is not cumulative with itself.
Revolver
- Fan the Hammer (*Attack)- After resolving a successful attack with the Revolver, this model may immediately make an additional Revolver attack targeting the last model hit or another model within 3" of the last target hit. This model may make up to three Revolver attacks during its activation.
Feat
- Great Cleave
Having studied for years under Asheth Magnus, Jaren has learned that ruthlessness and overwhelming power wins wars. As a result Jaren is able to motivate his 'jacks to great feats of violence. While he finds the old corteces of his favored 'jacks far more draining than the Ironclads on which he cut his warcasting teeth, the damage wrought upon the enemy is nothing short of impressive.
Models in Jaren's battlegroup currently within his control area gain +2 DEF and may move 1" and make an additional melee attack after destroying an enemy model with a melee attack.
Spells
| Spell | Cost | Range | POW | AOE | UP | OFF |
| Raging Steel | 2 | Self | - | CTRL | - | - |
| Warjacks in Jaren's Battlegroup currently within his control area may charge or slam at SPD + 5 without spending focus this turn. Affected models also gain Powerful Charge and Forefend. Raging Steel lasts for one round. | ||||||
| Flip the Bird | 3 | 8 | - | - | - | X |
| Target enemy living non-warcaster, non-warlock warrior model currently within Jaren's LOS and with LOS to Jaren must immediately make a CMD check. The affected model may break unit formation during this charge. | ||||||
| Earth Splitter | 3 | SP | 10 | - | - | X |
| Earth Splitter attacks use Jaren's current MAT, not his FOC. Models hit suffer a POW 10 damage roll. Earth Splitter attacks are magic attacks. Earth Splitter does not require a target. | ||||||
| Mind Hammer | 3 | 8 | 13 | - | - | X |

| Target model/unit gains +3 DEF against ranged attacks. | ||||||
| Battle Lust | 3 | 6 | - | - | - | - |
| Target friendly mercenary warrior model/unit becomes fearless and gains an additional damage die on all melee attacks for one round. | ||||||
Concept Notes
Well, this started as basically one of my d20 chars moved over to Warmachine - a melee beatstick for the most part with some 'jack support. He has evolved into something much more, and I see him now more as my avatar in the Iron Kingdoms.
Playtesting Notes
Playtesting and revisions are mostly complete, however feel free to leave comments. I'm also still looking for modelling suggestions - preferably a model I can use as is since I can't model worth a darn.
