Talk:Gorgandur Spawn

Given that no model in Hordes aside from the Carnivean has a POW 18 attack (I think), the sheer insanity that is Swallow is in every way broken. Since you are off the table, you can't boost or do anything else besides make basic attacks. It's literally impossible for any model without a POW 18+ attack to escape the Swallow.

And that's only the start of my "It's horribly and completely beyond balance" rant. Please tell me that this thing is never designed to hit the playing field for real.

  • Okay, "this thing is never designed to hit the playing field for real (never mind the truly OTT adult variation)" ;-) - more seriously, this was largely a stab at seeing what a Gorgandur Spawn would like like as a Hordes piece (and seeing if my 'd20 to Warmachine/Hordes' conversion system breaks down - which, of course, it does).
Swallow was an attempt to duplicate the (also somewhat clunky IMHO d20 swallow mechanic) - I need to re-work it.
    Anyway, thanks for your input.

Breathing much easier now. Probably needed to take a chill pill earlier :P

Converting the Gorgandur and Spawn into Hordes terms is like converting Giants or minor Dragons. It's really tough because if you want to have any possibility of playing them you really need to tone them down. If you made something like Swallow automatically Disgorge (eww...) the model next turn, then it could be okay. Likewise, you'd need to put a limit on how this thing can brrow and how well it can avoid attacks. You already need incredible firepower to bring this thing down - as in you are literally only chipping off 2-3 points of damage on boosted rolls from heavy warbeasts.

  • No problem, you made me have a look at the swallow mechanic, and pointed out that the first version wasn't very well thought out (and I spotted another error as well). I've revised Swallow, but the current version could still be a bit nasty - it's now a straight continuing effect that expires on a 1 or 2 - although I might just change it to a 'models destroyed by the bite are removed from play'
Giants could probably be made playable - I haven't looked at them yet, but I did a rough & ready conversion of Haufang (using a much earlier iteration of the conversion rules) - I gave up when I realised that her aura effect would blanked the entire playing area! (That and I'm not sure there is a readily available dragon model that is big enough, even for her) - but this is all a subject for another day.
The burrow mechanic is a straight copy of the one from the helldiver, burrowing models tend to be pretty much untouchable, but the only official ones are a Cryx light warjack and a Trollblood 1 damage each infantry unit. I've been considering some funky mechanic where the head and tail are separate models with a limit on how fare apart they can go, but I'm not sure about this yet. I should probably tone the armour down a bit, maybe.
Anyway, again, thanks for your input.
